- 01
Begin with the approved drawing set. Check its revision and find the structural notes, reinforcement schedule, and detail for this member.
- 02
Read the bar marks and the project callouts for size, count or spacing, direction, hooks, splice locations, and cover. Do not transfer a number from another detail or a general rule.
- 03
Place the specified supports, then arrange and tie the bars so the cage holds its documented position. Check openings, embeds, joints, and access before the pour.
- 04
Compare the completed work with the controlling detail and request the required inspection. If something conflicts or will not fit, pause and get an approved direction before changing steel.
- 05
Local code requirements and approved plans control the dimensions. This walkthrough is about reading and checking them, not setting universal values.
Field application
Practice reinforcement decisions
Work through each reinforcement scenario using the approved detail and responsible instructor or supervisor for project direction. Revise a choice whenever you want.
Jobsite decision / 02
Reinforcement conflicts with an opening or embed
The reinforcement does not fit the approved arrangement around an opening or embedded item.
How should the crew handle the affected work?
Jobsite decision / 03
The cage is ready for the pre-pour review
The reinforcement is assembled, supported, and still visible before the planned concrete placement.
What is the best next move before the pour?
Instructor verification
Verify reinforcement before the pour
Use the current job documents and responsible instructor or supervisor for job-specific direction. These temporary marks are not saved and do not certify a learner.
The learner locates the member detail and matching schedule in the current approved set, identifies the revision being used, and asks for direction if the documents conflict.
Not markedThe learner identifies the bar marks and follows the documented count or spacing, direction, hooks, and splice locations; the placed reinforcement matches the approved member detail.
Not markedThe specified chairs, spacers, or other supports are present, and the tied cage holds its documented position during normal access without an unapproved substitution.
Not markedThe learner points out the affected location, keeps it visible, and requests approved direction without independently moving, cutting, or welding reinforcement.
Not markedCover and arrangement are checked from the approved project documents, and the reinforcement remains visible until the required pre-pour review is complete.

Learning targets
By the end of this lesson
- Locate reinforcement callouts, schedules, notes, and revisions in the approved plan set.
- Identify the project-specific requirements for bar type, location, spacing, support, laps, and cover.
- Inspect reinforcement stability and raise conflicts before concrete placement.
Field sequence
Work through the steps
- 01
Find the controlling details
Check the drawing index, revision notes, general structural notes, member details, and reinforcement schedule. Ask the instructor or supervisor which approved detail governs when sheets conflict.
- 02
Translate the callouts into a placement plan
Identify bar marks, size designations, count or spacing, direction, hooks, splice locations, and cover requirements exactly as shown for the member being built.
- 03
Set supports and place reinforcement
Use the specified chairs, spacers, or other supports. Place and tie the reinforcement so the arrangement is stable and matches the approved detail; do not substitute material or change locations without authorization.
- 04
Check intersections and embedded items
Confirm required ties, laps, clearances, openings, embeds, and construction joints against the project documents. Keep access for the planned concrete placement without moving reinforcement out of position.
- 05
Request the required review before the pour
Make the reinforcement visible for inspection. Record and resolve discrepancies through the project approval process before concrete hides the work.
Plans and local requirements
Plans and applicable code
Code requirements depend on the jurisdiction, adopted edition, project specifications, and approved structural documents. This lesson teaches how to find and check those requirements; it does not provide universal bar sizes, spacing, splice lengths, or cover dimensions. Follow the locally applicable requirements and the project design, and refer conflicts to the engineer of record or instructor.
Before the work
Tools and materials
- Current approved structural and reinforcing drawings, schedules, and specifications
- Approved reinforcement and supports identified by the project documents
- Measuring and marking tools appropriate to the listed dimensions
- Tie tools, gloves, eye protection, and required protruding-steel protection
Observable checks
Before you move on
- The latest approved details and revisions are available at the work area.
- Bar identification, arrangement, spacing, splices, hooks, and supports match the applicable detail.
- Project-specified cover is checked from the reference surfaces and by the method required for the job.
- The cage remains stable during access and planned placement; required review is complete.
Watch for these
Common mistakes
- Assuming bar size or spacing from appearance, memory, or a detail for another member.
- Treating a general code summary as a replacement for approved plans and specifications.
- Moving bars, cutting steel, welding, or changing a splice without approval.
- Letting workers or equipment displace reinforcement after it has been checked.
Work safely
Safety notes
- Protect exposed bar ends as required by the site plan; do not rely on improvised covers.
- Use safe lifting methods for bundles and keep clear of suspended loads and pinch points.
- Wear eye and hand protection when cutting or tying wire, and control sharp tie ends.
- Only perform cutting, bending, welding, or field changes when the approved documents and qualified supervisor authorize the work.
